How having a baby Will Change Your Business

If you’re reading this, you’re probably on the exciting (and kinda overwhelming... let's be honest) journey to motherhood while managing your own business. First of all, congratulations! Becoming a mama is one of the most transformative experiences you’ll ever go through. I know you've probably already heard your fair share of "Just wait" statements. You know, when Aunt Susie sarcastically says "You think you're tired now, JUST WAIT". When your neighbor Carol says "You think you don't have any time now... JUST WAIT."

Yes, having a baby is a HUGE life adjustment, I'm not going to deny that fact. And yes, there will be hard times. But every sweet and magical moment outweighs the hard times x10000. So let's flip the script on the negative "Just Wait" narrative. Just wait until having a baby changes your business and changes YOU as a business owner for the better!

Let's rewind a little bit... When I found out I was pregnant with my son in 2022, I was a full-time wedding photographer. The thought of juggling my thriving business and a newborn was overwhelming, to say the least. And I'll admit my transition into motherhood was not the easiest, and I did NOT prepare my business well at all (that's another story, for another day). But I learned quickly how to adapt to my new role as Mama and how to adapt my business as well. Becoming a mama has honestly brought about some of the most positive changes in my business. Here’s how:

1. Enhanced Time Management Skills

Before motherhood, I thought I had a pretty good handle on time management. Boy, was I wrong! Motherhood has a way of making you a master at making the most of the time that you have. Some days you only have a 1 hour nap time to get what you need to get done. I’ve learned to make every minute count. This newfound efficiency has translated beautifully into my business. I’ve become more focused, productive, and able to prioritize tasks like never before.

2. Improved Delegation

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned as a mama is that I can’t do it all. And that’s okay! Motherhood has taught me the importance of delegating tasks, both at home and in my business. Hiring a coach and part time childcare has allowed me to be present while ensuring my business continues to run smoothly. It’s all about finding the right balance and not being afraid to ask for help.

3. Deeper Client Connections

Being a mama has given me a newfound empathy and understanding that I didn’t have before. This has helped me connect with my clients on a deeper level. Many of my clients are also Mamas, and sharing my own experiences has created a bond that goes beyond just business. It’s fostered a sense of community and mutual support that’s truly been life changing. I mean Mama In Biz was literally born out of my experience as a new mom and the craving of a community of support for Mama business owners!

4. Clearer Boundaries

Before my son was born, I struggled with setting boundaries. I often found myself working late into the night, answering emails at all hours, and never truly disconnecting. Motherhood has taught me the importance of setting clear boundaries. Now, I have designated work hours and family time, which has not only improved my work-life balance but also made me more present and focused during work hours.

5. Increased Creativity and Innovation

There’s something about becoming a parent that sparks creativity and innovation. Maybe it’s the sleep deprivation or the constant need to problem-solve, but I’ve found that motherhood has made me more creative in my business. I’ve come up with new ideas, streamlined processes, and found out-of-the-box solutions to challenges I never would have thought of before.

6. Stronger Resilience

Motherhood is not for the faint of heart. It’s a rollercoaster ride of emotions, challenges, and joys. This resilience has spilled over into my business. I’ve learned to navigate setbacks with grace, remain calm under pressure ('deep breaths, deeps breaths, you've got this' I tell myself as my toddler screams "NO" in my face for the 12th time in the past minute. It's made dealing with the more difficult clients feel like I'm on a beach vacation.), and bounce back stronger than ever. The challenges of motherhood have equipped me with a newfound strength that has made me a better business owner.

7. A Renewed Sense of Purpose

Finally, becoming a mama has given me a renewed sense of purpose. I want to build a business that not only supports my family but also sets an example for my son. This drive has fueled my passion and determination to succeed in ways I never imagined. I'm not just trying to make money, my goal is to create a legacy and to make my son proud! That perspective shift has truly brought me to new heights in my business, helping me see the bigger picture and persevere through the hard times, knowing I'm in it for the long game.

Becoming a mama will undoubtedly change your business, but I promise you, it’s for the better. Embrace the journey, trust in your abilities, and know that you’re not alone. There’s a whole community of mama entrepreneurs out there cheering you on!
